History, in case you forgot...

The SA Premier Soccer League was founded by Kaizer Motaung, Irvin Khoza, Raymond Hack and Jomo Sono in 1996. Manning Rangers were the first to be crowned champions of the Premier Soccer League in 1997 when the Gordon Igesund-coached side was stunning all and sundry by winning the title ahead of a number of more fancied opponents. We call it the Absa premiership or Absa premier league, whichever suits you best.
From 1998 to 2000 the league was dominated by Sundowns, who pulled off a hat-trick of titles.
In 2001, Igesund moved to Orlando Pirates and helped the Buccaneers secure the title. The following season he moved to Cape Town-based Santos, and steered it to win the league title, thus becoming the first coach to win the championship with three different clubs.
The 11 April 2001 marked a dark chapter in South African history when 43 people lost their lives and 158 others were injured in a stampede during a match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at an overcrowded Ellis Park Stadium.
The league was reduced from 18 to 16 teams after the end of the 2001-02 season to avoid fixture congestion, causing two teams, Ria Stars and Free State Stars, to be disbanded.
In 2004, a match-fixing scandal rocked South African soccer. An investigation codenamed "Operation Dribble" was launched by the South African police in June 2004. More than 40 arrests were made, ranging from club bosses to match commissioners, referees and their assistants.
Kaizer Chiefs successfully defended their league title in 2005 after they won the prestigious trophy in 2004 for the first time in a decade.
The 2005-06 season saw Mamelodi Sundowns capturing the title for the fourth time.
In 2007, the PSL signed a television deal with SuperSport worth R1.6-billion. It is the biggest sporting deal in the history of South Africa, and it took the PSL into the top 15 ranked leagues in the world in terms of commercial broadcast deals.
In the same year ABSA replaced Castle Lager as name sponsor, that is why it's now called the Absa Premiership.
In 2008, 2009 and 2010 Supersport United won a hat-trick of titles.
The 2010/2011 Premiership title belonged to the mighty Buccaneers of Orlando Pirates in what should be called a nail-biting finish.
The league currently has teams in most of the country's largest cities, with Port Elizabeth being the obvious exception. The city has not had a team in the PSL since the 2008–09 Premier Soccer League, when the city's Bay United F.C. were relegated.

Now, to what's happening as we speak...

With the clock ticking away nearing the end of the PSL season as quickly as it is, one question still remains on our minds. Who will win the 2011/2012 SA Premier soccer league? Prospects are looking good for Sundowns, mind you that I am a Khosi for life, a Chiefs fanatic in English. Let's not undermine the mighty Buccaneers who are quietly tip toeing behind Chiefs awaiting the slightest of errors by the Glamor Boys. It reminds us of the olden days when our National Soccer League was  the best thing out there...

    1. It's closely contested, mostly interesting because it's SA's soccer giants up there. As you already know, I am a Khosi for LIFE, but Sundowns are looking pretty good at the moment. They look like they mean business this season, all evident when they walloped some Cape town team 24-0. If that was a boxing match, a HUGE TOWEL would have been thrown in the first minute. BUT, this soccer, you MUST endure the pain for a WHOLE 90 minutes... brutal, but lovely!

  5. Yah neh, I like the honesty..., this weekend focuses on the Nedbank Cup and I think Pirates are in action. It looks like the PSL teams are on a mission to dish out simple yet unforgettable lessons to these lower division clubs. Fundi, since you are the first one on my subscription list, please help me get more SA Soccer fans "following" this blog. Just send them to http://sapremiersoccerleague.blogspot.com/. 6. Congratulations to the mighty Buccaneers for making it through to the last 16 by giving the Ethekwini Coastal boys only 1 lesson which was enough(Some teams need 24). The score was 1-0 obviously. Apparently no team has been able to defend the Nedbank Cup championship. Let's just wait and see...

  9. I don't think that this is the right attitude for Chiefs to win the league, if all we are worried about is winning against Pirates, ever thought that we CAN win the league 100 times winning against all the other teams except Pirates? I am not saying that we should lose to Pirates at all. All I am trying to say is that we should win all our games and stop concentrating only on Pirates games. Pirates lost to us a couple of times last season if I am not mistaken but guess what? THEY WON THE LEAGUE... COME ON THE GLAMOR BOYS!

  12. It does not seem that Pirates are in a serious mode as we witnessed their burial ceremony last night against Santos...They should have taken their minds off their upcoming game against Chiefs. See what happens when you lose focus????
